Candy for your music: Elementary CoverGloobus theme
When I saw that reader SciFi Jerry had popped a link to a CoverGloobus theme into the OMG! inbox my first thought was “I’ve only just posted a CoverGloobus theme, I’ll have to old this back for a few days.”
And then I looked at it.

Created by ~Orsobasso over on Deviant Art it’s a wonderfully good-looking addition to the pantheon of CoverGloobus themes and certainly a candidate – if you’re reading Jordi
– for being bundled up with the coverart app by default.
Fawning over, here’s the download link. Install instructions can found tucked neatly inside.

Coming Soon: Terminology App for the iPhone
Terminology is a great new dictionary + thesaurus + lots more app that’s coming to the iPhone next week. It was originally released as an iPad only app. I reviewed that version recently, and was hugely impressed by it.
I’ve also had a sneak peek at the new iPhone version that will be released next week, and it looks great too.

Back to School Sales – Big Price Drops for Tons of Sega iPhone Games
Here’s some more iPhone app sales goodness to celebrate this Back to School period of the year. Sega has got the vast majority of their iPhone games on sale – with some major price cuts to some very notable titles.
If there’s one thing SEGA endorses, it’s getting a good education — that, and playing excellent games for dirt-cheap prices on your iPhone. These are just some of the philosophies that make a good games company great.
So, to celebrate the coming of Fall and start of another School Year, we are having a special sale: starting August 26th and lasting until September 1st, tons of great SEGA iPhone games will be dropping dramatically in price!

Quick Look: QuickCal Mobile for iPhone
QuickCal Mobile, which is simply based on the Mac widget of the same name (and by the same developer, @Boutcher), will take whatever text you type and turn it into relevant event information (see the screenshot above). It can take a little bit to get used to, but it’s actually much faster and more efficient than filling out location, time, and date fields manually.

Coming Soon: Time Lapse Photo Journal for iPhone
This soon-to-be-released new app from Redbot Software looks good to me. It’s called Time Lapse Photo Journal and it seems quite a cool idea to me. It feels like one that should’ve been done already for the iPhone, and maybe there are other apps around that do this same thing and I’ve just missed out on spotting them.
In any case, it’s one I’ll want to take a look at – and I find it especially appealing since a new school year has just kicked off here in Austin and I think my wife and I can make great use of this tracking our daughter’s second grade year.

Faenza CoverGloobus Theme
It shameless self-publicity time folks!
Actually, it’s been a while since we last featured anything CoverGloobus related. This is partly because, right now, work on adding time-slider and volume support (amongst other things) is going on. Whilst you wait here’s a skin I made in a fit of boredom.
Faenza fans on the hunt for a square-y skin for their musical sleeves might like it.
I took a Faenza icon and turned it into a CoverGloobus skin for no other reason than ‘why not?’. The result is ‘faenzaoobus’ and I like it. It is a mite large (250×250) but on my desktop it doesn’t look that large. The theme uses .svg’s so you can edit the size yourself in the skin.xml and it will remain looking okay.
Download & Installation
Download @ http://d0od.deviantart.com/#/d2xayne
Install by extracting the archive and moving the ‘faenzaoobus’ folder to the themes folder within the hidden ‘CoverGloobus’ folder in your Home folder.
Get there quickly: -
- ALT+F2
- nautilus ~/.CoverGloobus/themes
Lovely iPhone Rumor of the Week–WiFi Sync to be Announced at September 1 Apple Event
WiFi sync has been near the top of my iPhone wish list for quite a while. It is actually available now if you are jailbroken, via the Wi-Fi Sync jailbreak app – which has always worked well for me whenever I’m jailbroken.
Now there are rumors that Apple may be about to announce their own WiFi sync solution for iDevices at next Wednesday’s special event.
Sources close to All Things Digital say they may be doing just that at next week’s ’special event’ where it’s expected a new range of iPod Touches will be announced. The reasoning behind this is that a new A4-processor inside an iPhone 4-like iPod Touch would see the requisite amount of data encyption across the entire range, something Apple’s licensing requires.
If we were allowed to cast our votes for changes we’d like to see announced next week, this one would definitely get mine. How about you?

Pad and Quill Little Black Book for iPhone 4
Now here is an unusual case design. The Little Black Book looks just like a Moleskine notebook, but with an iPhone 4-shaped hole where the pages would be. Now I don’t own an iPhone 4 myself, but I did requisition one for an afternoon for a little bit of testing and picture taking.
Overall, I think this form factor works beautifully for iPads, but the Pad and Quill design is of questionable utility when fitted for the iPhone.

Epic Win 1.01 for iPhone: adds sound effects, loot info
Just half a day after I had finished complaining about the lack of sound effects in Epic Win ($2.99), I end up finding an App Store update that adds sound effects to Epic Win. D’oh!
These new SFX make the app a lot more charming (you can now hear the wind blowing as you watch your avatar looking stoically at the left side of the screen), but not necessarily more useful, if you don’t like the app already. I’m still hoping the developers beef up the RPG or the task manager side of Epic Win (preferably both) so I can go back to enjoying it as much as most every other website seems to.

Canned for iPhone: easy texting templates
Just because something is canned, doesn’t mean it’s Spam. You can can plenty of other things, too, like tomatoes or text messages. If you don’t have the time to dice tomatoes, get canned tomatoes. If you don’t have time to write texts on your touchscreen device, get Canned for iPhone ($0.99).
All you need to do is write out your canned texts once, select the possible recipients for the text (ex. Thomas -> Patrick “Where’s the home button again?”), and you’re all set. The next time you need to respond with some sort of template, launch Canned, tap on the relevant pre-written text, and then send.
This app has been making waves amongst the folks I follow on Twitter (Minimal Mac, Shawn Blanc), so it seems to be doing something right.

Remember The Milk iPhone App Now Free, with a Little Catch
The Remember The Milk online task management service now has a free iPhone app – though it’s not quite the full-powered version of the app. Until yesterday, you had to have a Pro account with Remember The Milk in order to use the iPhone app.
Now there is a ‘basic app’ that is free for all RTM users, but with some limits; and a full-featured app for those who do have a Pro account.

Recommended: iRovr Sneak Peek at Rated G for Geek
I mentioned a few days back that a real old school iPhone favorite, iRovr (from back in ancient days before the App Store) is on its way back – this time in the form of a native iPhone app. The folks over at Rated G for Geek have now got a nice Sneak Peek post up about the upcoming iRovr app, and they seem quite impressed with it.
iRovr.com, once a popular social networking web app, is bringing a fresh look to keeping up with iPhone friends. This is different from any other iPhone social networking app I’ve tried before. After taking it for a test run, I’m amazed at how feature-rich it is, while still being easy to use.
The app sounds very good, I’m keen to see it when it’s released, which is expected to be in early September. My only wish on the preview post is that the screencaps were a little bigger. Check it out for yourself here:
http://www.ratedgforgeek.com/2010/08/26/irovr-soon-to-hit-the-app-store-sneak-peak/
Update: Thanks to Bill for his comment below. iRovr has updated the iRovr.com page since last week. There are some nice screencaps there now, and a list of some of the app’s cool features.

Quickly update your .iso’s to the latest Ubuntu Daily Build
If you have an Ubuntu 10.10 Daily build .iso knocking around you can quickly update it to the latest daily imprint using this nifty script by Jeff Stone.
Talking about it he says: -
“I’ve written the following script to help download daily builds. I call it zsync-ubuntu-daily-live. As it is right now, if you execute it with no parameters, it will automatically download the ubuntu and ubuntu-netbook daily build, but it also supports kubuntu and xubuntu. Extending it for other *buntus is straightforward. First it checks for a new build by comparing the timestamp of MD5SUMS. If there’s a new build, it will use zsync or wget as appropriate. You need the zsync package installed.”
The link to the bash script is here: http://pastebin.com/i60CgkiT
Chromium’s restyled ‘new tab’ page is minimal win
With so many visually important Ubuntu updates landing today it was nice to find something else non-Ubuntu related amongst them.
Users of the Chromium Daily Builds may (or may not have depending on level of observation!) a new look ‘new tab’ page.

The evolution of the Chrome/ium interface is one I really love following – simply because changes often appear when you least expect it!
The new look is, visually at least, easier on the eye. I like being able to collapse any/all of the segments as and when I wish, tucking away the commanding colours of garish thumbnails.
Chromium Daily PPA (experimental & liable to crash)
- sudo add-apt-repository ppa:chromium-daily/ppa
- sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install chromium-browser

Either way this is, for now at least, Ubuntu 10.10′s new default wallpaper. Thoughts?
